Working
with the Lake Placid/Essex County CVB and various local, state and federal
agencies, OCG led a highly complex destination development initiative
to promote responsible and environmentally sensitive economic revitalization
for a largely depressed, five-town region. Throughout this initiative,
OCG engaged people from all sectors of the community in open town forums
and focus groups, using a unique and innovative destination development
model that helped to unify the diverse interests of government, business,
environmental groups, and local residents.
OCG also worked closely with the Adirondack Park Association (APA) and
several other environmental groups to assure sustainable economic development
for the region. In this regard, OCG was successful in re-framing APA-imposed
restrictions as a strength, rather than an impediment to development;
thus winning enhanced support and consensus throughout the region with
regard to environmental issues.
OCG’s efforts resulted in a five-year development plan within APA
guidelines, that included the integration of marketing and product development
efforts; individual development initiatives for each of the five towns;
and dedicated funding for a coordinated marketing effort.
These efforts also led to OCG’s ongoing consulting relationship
with the Adirondack Economic Development Commission, including a series
of planning retreats focused on economic development beyond tourism; and
frequent, ongoing consultation regarding a wide range of economic development
issues.
OCG has maintained an ongoing relationship with the Lake Placid/Essex
County CVB. Additional projects have included: resource development, organizational
review and subsequent restructuring, board development and strategic marketing.
